Sir Henry Wyatt and the Caterer Kitty,

Sir Henry Wyatt and the Caterer Kitty,

A poet, courtier, and nobleman during the final phase of the English War of the Roses, Sir Henry Wyatt was a staunch supporter of Henry Tudor, and as a result ran afoul of King Richard III. Richard ordered him to be locked up in the Tower of London where he was exposed to the cold with little clothing, tortured, and fed a starvation diet. During his imprisonment he befriended a cat who climbed through his window. The cat would help keep him warm when he was cold, and bring him pigeons and other birds for food. Because of the cat’s kindness Sir Henry Wyatt survived his imprisonment until in 1485 Henry Tudor (King Henry VII) defeated Richard III in battle and ascended to the throne.

Sir Henry Wyatt named the feline “The Cater Cat” and had the above portrait painted later in his life. For the rest of his life Wyatt was noted for especially loving cats, always having a feline with him wherever he went.
