Scythian Silver Horse Harness Ornaments, 4th Century BC

The large oval plate is decorated with a deity controlling two wild animals. Each round ornament represents the bust of a man wearing animal skins.

The horse held an important place in the everyday life of the Scythians. Impressive amounts of horse remains have been found in several hundred Eurasian graves. The animals were sacrificed and buried with their harnesses which were sometimes decorated with gold, silver or bronze.
