Wisconsin Veterans Museum Part One: The US Civil War

Visitors to Madison, the capital of Wisconsin, would do well to visit the Wisconsin Veterans Museum. It is a small, but extremely well designed museum, and admission is free. Today I am sharing a few swords and other items from their exhibit on the Civil War. Tomorrow we will see items from their exhibit on the Spanish-American War.

Is that body armor next to these swords ?

Yes, actually. The Civil War was a big money making opportunity for Northern industries, especially the steel industry, who sold “bulletproof” vests made of either thin steel plates or chainmail to soldiers through mail order. They had mixed results. Some worked, but we’re obviously heavy and ill-suited for combat in the humid Southern climate. Others were little more useful than wearing a dinnerplate over your chest.

Mail order, AH.
